VATICAN CITY, May 27 (Reuters) - Pope Leo on Wednesday decried what he called a “sharp intensification” of the war in Ukraine, telling pilgrims at his weekly audience at the Vatican that he wanted to express closeness to civilians killed in recent attacks.

“I am following with concern the war in Ukraine,” Leo, the first U.S. pope, said. “War does not solve problems, but aggravates them. It does not build security, but multiplies suffering and hatred”.

“Where missiles and drones fall, hopes also fall, homes and places of worship are destroyed, and innocent lives are shattered,” he said.

Città del Vaticano, 27 maggio (Reuters) - Papa Leone mercoledì ha denunciato quella che ha definito una “brusca intensificazione” della guerra in Ucraina, dicendo ai pellegrini dell’udienza settimanale in Vaticano di voler esprimere vicinanza ai civili uccisi nei recenti attentati.

“Seguo con preoccupazione la guerra in Ucraina”, ha detto Leone, il primo Papa statunitense. “La guerra non risolve i problemi, ma li aggrava. Non costruisce sicurezza, ma moltiplica la sofferenza e l’odio”.

“Dove cadono missili e droni, cadono anche le speranze, le case e i luoghi di culto vengono distrutti, e le vite innocenti vengono spezzate”, ha detto.
