WHO’s Tedros says Uganda should reconsider Congo border closure over Ebola

KAMPALA, June 8 (Reuters) - The director-general of the World Health Organization said on Monday that Uganda should reconsider its decision to close its border with Democratic Republic of Congo because of an Ebola outbreak.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the comments during a visit to an Ebola isolation unit at a hospital in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.

In other remarks, Tedros praised the East African country for its Ebola response, calling it prompt and capable.

But asked by a Reuters reporter about Uganda’s decision late last month to temporarily shut its border with Congo to try to limit the spread of Ebola, he said blanket travel restrictions don’t work, “so I hope they (Uganda’s authorities) reconsider”.

The WHO has declared the outbreak of the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola a public health emergency of international concern.

The epicentre is in Congo’s Ituri province, where Africa’s top public health agency says there have been 515 confirmed cases out of Congo’s total of 544.

Uganda has reported 19 confirmed Ebola cases, mostly people who entered the country from Congo.

KAMPALA, 8 giugno (Reuters) - Il direttore generale dell’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità ha detto lunedì che l’Uganda dovrebbe riconsiderare la sua decisione di chiudere il confine con la Repubblica Democratica del Congo a causa di un’epidemia di Ebola.

Il capo dell’OMS Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus ha fatto questi commenti durante una visita a un’unità di isolamento per l’Ebola in un ospedale della capitale dell’Uganda, Kampala.

In altre osservazioni, Tedros ha elogiato il Paese dell’Africa orientale per la sua risposta all’Ebola, definendola pronta e capace.

Ma alla domanda di un reporter della Reuters sulla decisione dell’Uganda, presa alla fine del mese scorso, di chiudere temporaneamente il confine con il Congo per cercare di limitare la diffusione dell’Ebola, ha risposto che le restrizioni generalizzate ai viaggi non funzionano, “quindi spero che (le autorità ugandesi) ci ripensino”.

L’OMS ha dichiarato l’epidemia del raro ceppo Bundibugyo di Ebola un’emergenza di salute pubblica di rilevanza internazionale.

L’epicentro è nella provincia Ituri del Congo, dove la massima agenzia sanitaria africana afferma che ci sono stati 515 casi confermati sui 544 totali del Congo.

L’Uganda ha riportato 19 casi confermati di Ebola, per la maggior parte persone entrate in paese dal Congo.
