Italy announces release of Flotilla activists detained in Libya

ROME, June 23 (Reuters) - Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Tuesday two Italian pro-Palestinian campaigners detained in Libya had been released after spending about a month in custody.

• Israeli forces last month arrested hundreds of people on board dozens of ships in international waters, to halt Global Sumud Flotilla volunteers trying to bring aid supplies to the Gaza Strip.

• In a post on social media platform X, Tajani said the two Italians had been handed over to Italy’s consul in Benghazi, along with a Uruguayan national who also holds Italian citizenship.

• The people held in Libya were part of a separate group of Flotilla activists who tried to reach the Palestinian enclave by land.

• According to the Global Sumud Flotilla, the activists had staged a hunger strike in protest at their detention and alleged mistreatment.

• Tajani said they were due to return to Italy on Wednesday.

ROMA, 23 giugno (Reuters) - Il ministro degli esteri italiano Antonio Tajani ha dichiarato martedì che due attivisti italiani filopalestinesi detenuti in Libia sono stati rilasciati dopo aver trascorso circa un mese in custodia cautelare.

• Il mese scorso le forze israeliane hanno arrestato centinaia di persone a bordo di decine di navi in acque internazionali, per fermare i volontari della Global Sumud Flotilla che cercavano di portare aiuti umanitari nella Striscia di Gaza.

• In un post pubblicato sulla piattaforma social X, Tajani ha dichiarato che i due italiani sono stati consegnati al console italiano a Bengasi, insieme a un cittadino uruguaiano che possiede anche la cittadinanza italiana.

• Le persone trattenute in Libia facevano parte di un gruppo separato di attivisti della Flottiglia che aveva tentato di raggiungere l’enclave palestinese via terra.

• Secondo la Global Sumud Flotilla, gli attivisti avevano indetto uno sciopero della fame per protestare contro la loro detenzione e i presunti maltrattamenti subiti.

• Tajani ha dichiarato che il loro ritorno in Italia è previsto per mercoledì.
