Vietnam says its foreign minister will visit Myanmar on Wednesday

HANOI, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung is scheduled to pay an official visit to Myanmar on Wednesday, Vietnam’s foreign ministry said, in what would be the first trip by a senior Vietnamese official to the country since a 2021 military coup triggered a civil war.

Following are more details of the trip:

• Trung is expected to co-chair a bilateral cooperation meeting with his Myanmar counterpart, the ministry said in a statement.

• The trip comes a month after Vietnam and Myanmar exchanged new ambassadors.

• Vietnam regards Myanmar as an integral member of ASEAN and considers ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus on bringing peace to the country as the key framework for the bloc’s continued engagement and support, the foreign ministry has said.

• Myanmar’s government has been isolated diplomatically from ASEAN since the 2021 coup, though Thailand and Laos have pushed for greater engagement in recent months, with Myanmar’s junta chief turned president Min Aung Hlaing visiting Laos in July and Thailand in August.

HANOI, 25 agosto (Reuters) - Il ministro degli esteri vietnamita Le Hoai Trung è in programma di recarsi in visita ufficiale in Birmania mercoledì, ha riferito il ministero degli Esteri vietnamita; si tratterebbe del primo viaggio di un alto funzionario vietnamita nel paese da quando il colpo di Stato militare del 2021 ha scatenato una guerra civile.

Di seguito sono riportati ulteriori dettagli sul viaggio:

• Trung dovrebbe presiedere congiuntamente un incontro di cooperazione bilaterale con il suo omologo della Birmania, ha affermato il ministero in una dichiarazione.

• Il viaggio arriva un mese dopo lo scambio di nuovi ambasciatori tra Vietnam e Birmania.

• Il Vietnam considera la Birmania un membro a pieno titolo dell’ASEAN e ritiene che il Consenso in cinque punti dell’ASEAN per riportare la pace nel paese costituisca il quadro di riferimento fondamentale per il continuo impegno e sostegno del blocco, ha affermato il ministero degli Esteri.

• Il governo della Birmania è rimasto diplomaticamente isolato dall’ASEAN dal colpo di Stato del 2021, sebbene la Thailandia e il Laos abbiano spinto per un maggiore coinvolgimento negli ultimi mesi, con il capo della giunta birmana, diventato presidente, Min Aung Hlaing, in visita in Laos a luglio e in Thailandia ad agosto.
