Greek F-4 crashes during air show near Athens, two pilots dead, sources say

ATHENS, Sept 5 (Reuters) - A Greek two-seat F-4 Phantom fighter jet crashed on Saturday during an air show at Tanagra air base north of Athens, killing the pilots, two officials told Reuters.

“Unfortunately the two pilots are dead,” one of the officials said, adding that the Phantom crashed about two kilometres outside the airport and there were no reports of injuries to any bystanders or residents in the wider area.

Footage from public broadcaster ERT showed the F-4 performing a right turn a few meters above the ground seconds before it crashed and erupted into a fireball. Eleven firefighting aircraft and helicopters were operating to contain the fire that spread to the nearby forest.

“We were all stunned. It hadn’t been airborne for more than three minutes,” an eyewitness told ERT.

Loudspeakers at the air base were urging people to leave the area. The F-4 was participating in the Athens Flying Week, an annual event that attracts military and civilian aviation teams from dozens of countries.

ATENE, 5 settembre (Reuters) - Un caccia greco F-4 Phantom biposto si è schiantato sabato durante una manifestazione aerea presso la base aerea di Tanagra, a nord di Atene, causando la morte dei piloti, secondo quanto riferito a Reuters da due funzionari.

«Purtroppo i due piloti sono morti», ha dichiarato uno dei funzionari, aggiungendo che il Phantom si è schiantato a circa due chilometri dall’aeroporto e che non sono stati segnalati feriti tra i passanti o i residenti della zona circostante.

Le immagini dell’emittente pubblica ERT hanno mostrato l’F-4 mentre effettuava una virata a destra a pochi metri dal suolo pochi secondi prima di schiantarsi e trasformarsi in una palla di fuoco. Undici aerei antincendio ed elicotteri erano all’opera per contenere l’incendio che si è propagato alla foresta vicina.

«Eravamo tutti sbalorditi. Era in volo da non più di tre minuti», ha raccontato un testimone oculare all’ERT.

Gli altoparlanti della base aerea esortavano la popolazione ad allontanarsi dalla zona. L’F-4 stava partecipando all’Atene Flying Week, un evento annuale che attira squadre di aviazione militare e civile provenienti da decine di paesi.
