Jailed American Robert Gilman taken to Russian hospital, newspaper reports

MOSCOW, July 9 (Reuters) - Former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman, who is serving a long prison sentence in Russia, has been admitted to hospital, Kommersant newspaper reported on Thursday.

The business daily quoted Gilman’s lawyer as saying he was receiving treatment but that it was too early to talk about a diagnosis.

Reuters requested a comment from the U.S. State Depertment.

Gilman was first jailed in 2022 for assaulting a police officer while drunk, and his sentence was extended in 2024 following subsequent convictions for assaulting prison officials and a state investigator.

State media reported last December that he was facing a total sentence of 10 years after a further conviction for assaulting prison staff.

Gilman’s supporters in the United States say he was ill when he was first arrested, and that he was provoked while in prison into actions that led to the further charges.

Kommersant said that because of Gilman’s unspecified illness, a court in the southern city of Voronezh had postponed a hearing into a prosecutor’s appeal against the latest sentence.

A source close to the Kremlin told Reuters last year that Gilman was one of nine people on a list of Americans jailed in Russia that Washington wanted to be released and returned to the U.S.

MOSCA, 9 luglio (Reuters) - L’ex marine statunitense Robert Gilman, che sta scontando una lunga pena detentiva in Russia, è stato ricoverato in ospedale, secondo quanto riportato giovedì dal quotidiano Kommersant.

Il quotidiano economico ha citato l’avvocato di Gilman, secondo cui il suo assistito è in cura, ma è ancora troppo presto per parlare di una diagnosi.

Reuters ha chiesto un commento al Dipartimento di Stato degli Stati Uniti.

Gilman era stato incarcerato per la prima volta nel 2022 per aver aggredito un agente di polizia mentre era ubriaco, e la sua pena è stata estesa nel 2024 a seguito di successive condanne per aver aggredito funzionari penitenziari e un investigatore statale.

I media statali hanno riferito lo scorso dicembre che rischiava una pena complessiva di 10 anni a seguito di un’ulteriore condanna per aver aggredito il personale penitenziario.

I sostenitori di Gilman negli Stati Uniti sostengono che fosse malato al momento del primo arresto e che, mentre si trovava in carcere, sia stato provocato a compiere azioni che hanno portato alle ulteriori accuse.

Il «Kommersant» ha riferito che, a causa della malattia non specificata di Gilman, un tribunale della città meridionale di Voronezh aveva rinviato l’udienza relativa al ricorso presentato dal pubblico ministero contro l’ultima sentenza.

Una fonte vicina al Cremlino ha dichiarato lo scorso anno a Reuters che Gilman era una delle nove persone presenti in un elenco di cittadini americani detenuti in Russia di cui Washington chiedeva il rilascio e il rimpatrio negli Stati Uniti.
