Aug 19 (Reuters) - The head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, Roman Gofman, held a phone call with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani last week in which they discussed Turkey’s military presence in Syria, three people familiar with the matter said.

The call, which the sources said took place on August 14, came days before Israel launched airstrikes on a Syrian military airbase in the north of the country on Tuesday.

It marks one of the highest-level contacts yet between Israel and the new Syrian government since the fall of former dictator Bashar al-Assad in December 2014.

The Israeli prime minister’s office, which handles queries regarding Mossad, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did a spokesperson for Shaibani.

19 agosto (Reuters) - Il capo dell’agenzia di intelligence israeliana Mossad, Roman Gofman, ha avuto una conversazione telefonica con il ministro degli esteri siriano Asaad al-Shaibani la scorsa settimana, durante la quale hanno discusso della presenza militare turca in Siria, secondo quanto riferito da tre persone informate sulla questione.

La telefonata, che secondo le fonti avrebbe avuto luogo il 14 agosto, è avvenuta pochi giorni prima che Israele sferrasse, martedì, attacchi aerei contro una base aerea militare siriana nel nord del paese.

Si tratta di uno dei contatti di più alto livello mai avvenuti tra Israele e il nuovo governo siriano dalla caduta dell’ex dittatore Bashar al-Assad nel dicembre 2014.

L’ufficio del primo ministro israeliano, che gestisce le richieste relative al Mossad, non ha risposto immediatamente a una richiesta di commento, né lo ha fatto un portavoce di Shaibani.
