VILNIUS, April 30 (Reuters) - Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda said he was supportive of his country joining the U.S. freedom of navigation mission in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that he would present the proposal to the Baltic state’s defence council.

The United States is pushing for other countries to help restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a State Department cable seen by Reuters, as oil prices surged to their highest in more than four years on fears of longer-term disruptions to global fuel supplies.

“We have received the U.S. proposal to join the Hormuz Strait navigation restoration coalition, and I intend to shortly present this proposal to the State Defence Council,” the president told a news conference in Vilnius on Thursday.

“We would need a mandate from parliament,” he added.

VILNIUS, 30 aprile (Reuters) - Il presidente lituano Gitanas Nauseda ha detto di essere favorevole all’adesione del suo paese alla missione statunitense per la libertà di navigazione nello Stretto di Hormuz, aggiungendo che presenterà la proposta al consiglio di difesa del paese baltico.

Gli Stati Uniti stanno facendo pressione affinché altri Paesi aiutino a ripristinare la libertà di navigazione nello Stretto di Hormuz, secondo un cablogramma del Dipartimento di Stato visionato dalla Reuters, mentre i prezzi del petrolio sono saliti ai massimi degli ultimi quattro anni sui timori di interruzioni a lungo termine delle forniture globali di carburante.

“Abbiamo ricevuto la proposta degli Stati Uniti di unirci alla coalizione per il ripristino della navigazione nello Stretto di Hormuz e intendo presentare a breve questa proposta al Consiglio di Stato per la Difesa”, ha detto il presidente a una conferenza stampa a Vilnius giovedì.

“Avremmo bisogno di un mandato da parte del Parlamento”, ha aggiunto.
