Accused German Red Army Faction militant sentenced to 13 years

VERDEN, Germany, May 27 (Reuters) - A German court sentenced Daniela Klette, identified by police as a former member of the extreme-left Red Army Faction, to 13 years in prison on Wednesday for a series of armed robberies.

Klette, 67, was arrested in 2024 after more than three decades in hiding when she was found living under an assumed name in Berlin by an investigative journalist using facial recognition software.

The Red Army Faction, which grew out of the leftist protest movements of the 1960s, carried out a wave of kidnappings and murders of prominent officials and business leaders that reached a peak in late 1970s before gradually petering out as its members were arrested or killed.

Prosecutors said Klette was ⁠part of the so-called third generation of the group - sometimes known as the Baader-Meinhof Gang after its founders - a militant group which sought to overthrow what it saw as a fascist capitalist state and killed some 34 people between 1970 and 1991.

The group issued a final statement in 1998, declaring an end to its “urban guerrilla warfare”, but individual members remained on the run for decades.

In addition to Klette, police are still looking for two men suspected of being her accomplices, suspected former Red Army Faction members Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg.

VERDEN, Germania, 27 maggio (Reuters) - Un tribunale tedesco ha condannato mercoledì Daniela Klette, identificata dalla polizia come ex membro della Fazione dell’Armata Rossa di estrema sinistra, a 13 anni di carcere per una serie di rapine a mano armata.

Klette, 67 anni, è stata arrestata nel 2024 dopo oltre tre decenni di clandestinità, quando è stata trovata a vivere sotto falso nome a Berlino da un giornalista investigativo che ha utilizzato un software di riconoscimento facciale.

La Fazione dell’Armata Rossa, nata dai movimenti di protesta di sinistra degli anni Sessanta, ha portato avanti un’ondata di rapimenti e omicidi di importanti funzionari e dirigenti d’azienda che ha raggiunto l’apice alla fine degli anni Settanta, prima di esaurirsi gradualmente con l’arresto o l’uccisione dei suoi membri.

I procuratori hanno detto che Klette faceva parte della cosiddetta terza generazione del gruppo - a volte noto come Banda Baader-Meinhof, dal nome dei suoi fondatori - un gruppo militante che cercava di rovesciare quello che considerava uno Stato capitalista fascista e che ha ucciso circa 34 persone tra il 1970 e il 1991.

Il gruppo rilasciò una dichiarazione finale nel 1998, dichiarando la fine della sua “guerriglia urbana”, ma i singoli membri rimasero in fuga per decenni.

Oltre a Klette, la polizia sta ancora cercando due uomini sospettati di essere i suoi complici, i presunti ex membri della Fazione dell’Armata Rossa Ernst-Volker Staub e Burkhard Garweg.
