Military helicopter crash in Pakistani Kashmir killed 22, security sources say

MUZAFFARABAD, June 11 (Reuters) - At least 22 personnel were killed in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in Pakistani Kashmir, security sources said on Thursday, as funeral processions were held in the territory’s capital Muzaffarabad.

Videos from the crash scene showed plumes of thick, black smoke rising from behind the buildings where the helicopter went down.

The source said those killed included 19 soldiers, one army major and two colonels.

The soldiers received a ceremonial funeral with their coffins draped in Pakistani flags and carried by members of the artillery unit stationed in Kashmir.

Pakistan’s military said on Wednesday that the Mi-17 helicopter crashed due to a technical fault and all those on board were killed.

An inquiry has been ordered into the exact technical cause of the accident, it added.

The crash took place at a time when strict security restrictions have been imposed on Kashmir following clashes between supporters of a recently banned alliance of civil society groups and security forces that killed at least 11 people on Sunday.

MUZAFFARABAD, 11 giugno (Reuters) - Almeno 22 persone sono rimaste uccise nell’incidente dell’elicottero militare di mercoledì nel Kashmir pakistano, hanno detto giovedì fonti della sicurezza, mentre si svolgevano le processioni funebri nella capitale del territorio, Muzaffarabad.

I video dalla scena dell’incidente hanno mostrato pennacchi di fumo denso e nero che si alzavano da dietro gli edifici in cui l’elicottero è precipitato.

La fonte ha detto che tra i morti ci sono 19 soldati, un maggiore dell’esercito e due colonnelli.

I soldati hanno ricevuto un funerale cerimoniale con le bare avvolte da bandiere pakistane e trasportate da membri dell’unità di artiglieria di stanza in Kashmir.

L’esercito pakistano ha dichiarato mercoledì che l’elicottero Mi-17 si è schiantato a causa di un guasto tecnico e che tutte le persone a bordo sono rimaste uccise.

È stata ordinata un’inchiesta per determinare l’esatta causa tecnica dell’incidente, ha aggiunto.

L’incidente è avvenuto in un momento in cui sono state imposte severe restrizioni di sicurezza in Kashmir, in seguito agli scontri tra i sostenitori di un’alleanza di gruppi della società civile, recentemente bandita, e le forze di sicurezza, che domenica hanno ucciso almeno 11 persone.
