NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) - The European Union’s naval mission in the Red Sea would need more than 10 warships, its foreign policy chief said on Monday, adding that for now there weren’t that many in the area.

“When Aspides (the EU military operation) was put in place, then the indication was that it needs at least 10 ships. The situation, I think, is even more grave right now,” she told reporters on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.

Kallas last week sent a letter to member states asking them to contribute more naval and air assets in the region, diplomats said.

NEW YORK, 21 settembre (Reuters) - La missione navale dell’Unione europea nel Mar Rosso avrebbe bisogno di più di 10 navi da guerra, ha affermato lunedì la responsabile della politica estera dell’Unione europea, aggiungendo che per ora non ce ne sono così tante nella zona.

“Quando è stata avviata Aspides (l’operazione militare dell’Unione europea), si stimava che fossero necessarie almeno 10 navi. La situazione, a mio avviso, è ora ancora più grave”, ha dichiarato ai giornalisti a margine del raduno annuale dei leader mondiali presso le Nazioni Unite.

La scorsa settimana Kallas ha inviato una lettera agli Stati membri chiedendo loro di fornire un maggiore contributo in termini di risorse navali e aeree nella regione, secondo quanto riferito da alcuni diplomatici.
