EU expects positive decisions on 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine on Wednesday

LUXEMBOURG, April 21 (Reuters) - The European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said she expected “positive decisions” on the 90 billion euro ($105.94 billion) loan for Ukraine to be made on Wednesday.

This month’s electoral defeat of Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Ukraine’s harshest EU foe, could pave the way for the loan that Kyiv urgently needs to fund the war with Russia. The loan was originally agreed upon by all EU member states in December.

“We expect some positive decisions tomorrow on the 90 billion loan,” Kallas told reporters on Tuesday, as EU foreign ministers gathered to meet in Luxembourg.

“Ukraine really needs this loan and it’s also a sign that Russia cannot outlast Ukraine. This is extremely important at this moment,” she added.

That view was echoed by Irish foreign minister Helen McEntee.

“It’s really important as an EU that we make progress on the 90 billion euro loan, that we make progress on the 20th package of sanctions and that we’re able to exert as much pressure as possible on Russia,” she said.

“I was in Ukraine with a number of colleagues in recent weeks and what’s very clear is that we are at that breaking point where that loan is absolutely essential,” added McEntee.

LUSSEMBURGO, 21 aprile (Reuters) - Il capo della politica estera dell’Unione europea Kaja Kallas ha detto di aspettarsi “decisioni positive” sul prestito di 90 miliardi di euro (105 miliardi di dollari) per l’Ucraina da prendere mercoledì.La sconfitta elettorale di questo mese del primo ministro ungherese Viktor Orban, il più acerrimo nemico dell’Unione europea, potrebbe aprire la strada al prestito di cui Kiev ha urgente bisogno per finanziare la guerra con la Russia. Il prestito era stato originariamente concordato da tutti gli Stati membri dell’Unione europea a dicembre.

“Ci aspettiamo decisioni positive domani sul prestito di 90 miliardi”, ha dichiarato Kallas ai reporter martedì, mentre i ministri degli esteri dell’Unione europea si riunivano in Lussemburgo.

“L’Ucraina ha davvero bisogno di questo prestito ed è anche un segno che la Russia non può superare l’Ucraina. Questo è estremamente importante in questo momento”, ha aggiunto.

Questo punto di vista è stato ripreso dal ministro degli Esteri irlandese Helen McEntee.

“È davvero importante, come Unione europea, che si compiano progressi sul prestito di 90 miliardi di euro, che si compiano progressi sul 20° pacchetto di sanzioni e che si riesca a esercitare la massima pressione possibile sulla Russia”, ha detto.

“Sono stata in Ucraina con alcuni colleghi nelle ultime settimane e ciò che è molto chiaro è che siamo a quel punto di rottura in cui quel prestito è assolutamente essenziale”, ha aggiunto McEntee.
