China’s military says it tracked Dutch frigate in Taiwan Strait

BEIJING, June 5 (Reuters) - China’s military said on Friday it had dispatched naval and air assets to track and monitor the Dutch frigate De Ruyter transiting the Taiwan Strait.

The Netherlands said the warship was ⁠sailing through the region for diplomatic, security and economic reasons and was operating in accordance with international law.

Beijing last week said the same frigate illegally intruded into the Paracel Islands archipelago in the disputed South China Sea, to which the Dutch government gave the same response.

The People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command (ETC) said in a statement that “forces of the PLA ETC will stay on high alert at all times and resolutely safeguard China’s sovereignty and security, as well as regional peace and stability”.

In addition to claiming sovereignty over democratically governed Taiwan, Beijing views the narrow, highly strategic strait as Chinese territorial waters.

BEIJING, 5 giugno (Reuters) - L’esercito cinese ha detto venerdì di aver inviato mezzi navali e aerei per seguire e monitorare la fregata olandese De Ruyter in transito nello Stretto di Taiwan.

I Paesi Bassi hanno dichiarato che la nave da guerra stava attraversando la regione per motivi diplomatici, di sicurezza ed economici e che stava operando in conformità con il diritto internazionale.

Pechino la scorsa settimana ha dichiarato che la stessa fregata si è intrufolata illegalmente nell’arcipelago delle isole Paracel, nel conteso Mar Cinese Meridionale, a cui il governo olandese ha dato la stessa risposta.

Il Comando del Teatro Orientale dell’Esercito Popolare di Liberazione (ETC) ha dichiarato in un comunicato che “le forze dell’ETC del PLA rimarranno sempre in stato di massima allerta e salvaguarderanno con determinazione la sovranità e la sicurezza della Cina, nonché la pace e la stabilità regionale”.

Oltre a rivendicare la sovranità su Taiwan, governata democraticamente, Pechino considera lo stretto, altamente strategico, come acque territoriali cinesi.
