Two more Guatemalan men plead guilty in smuggling deaths of 55 migrants in Texas

July 8 (Reuters) - Two more Guatemalan nationals pleaded guilty in Texas on Wednesday to human smuggling charges stemming from the December 2021 crash of a tractor-trailer truck in Mexico that killed 55 of the 160-plus migrants crammed inside the vehicle.

Jorge Agapito Ventura, 34, who was arrested in Texas in December 2024, and Oswaldo Manuel Zavala Quino, 26, one of five co-defendants extradited to the United States the following year to face charges in the case, each faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Sentencing was set for October 6, according to a statement released by the U.S. Justice Department.

As part of their guilty pleas, both admitted in federal court in Texas that they conspired to smuggle adults and unaccompanied children from Guatemala through Mexico into the United States.

The charges stem from one such operation in which an estimated 166 migrants were packed into a tractor-trailer rig that overturned and slammed into a bridge abutment near the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez in Chiappas, Mexico, on December 9, 2021.

Fifty-five of the migrants died in the accident, including a 16-year-old girl, and dozens of others were injured. Survivors said they had been squeezed into the trailer compartment so tightly that most of the migrants could only stand.

Video footage of the aftermath showed bodies scattered across the scene of the crash, which federal authorities have described as one of the deadliest human smuggling tragedies in recent memory.

Mexican officials at the time said nearly all of the victims were Guatemalan. Chiapas authorities said three people from the Dominican Republic, a Honduran, a Mexican and an Ecuadorean were among the injured.

Three of the four other Guatemalan nationals extradited to the United States in the case have pleaded guilty to similar charges — one in April and two last month. Charges against the sixth defendant are still pending.

“These defendants worked together to exploit vulnerable people by breaking the immigration laws of this country, with deadly consequences that followed,” Assistant U.S. Attorney General A. Tysen Duva said in a statement.

8 luglio (Reuters) - Mercoledì, in Texas, altri due cittadini guatemaltechi si sono dichiarati colpevoli delle accuse di traffico di esseri umani relative all’incidente avvenuto nel dicembre 2021 in Messico, in cui un autoarticolato si è ribaltato causando la morte di 55 dei oltre 160 migranti stipati all’interno del veicolo.

Jorge Agapito Ventura, 34 anni, arrestato in Texas nel dicembre 2024, e Oswaldo Manuel Zavala Quino, 26 anni, uno dei cinque coimputati estradati negli Stati Uniti l’anno successivo per rispondere delle accuse relative al caso, rischiano entrambi una pena massima dell’ergastolo.

La sentenza è stata fissata per il 6 ottobre, secondo una dichiarazione rilasciata dal Dipartimento di Giustizia degli Stati Uniti.

Nell’ambito delle loro dichiarazioni di colpevolezza, entrambi hanno ammesso davanti al tribunale federale del Texas di aver cospirato per trafficare adulti e minori non accompagnati dal Guatemala attraverso il Messico verso gli Stati Uniti.

Le accuse derivano da una di queste operazioni, nel corso della quale circa 166 migranti sono stati stipati in un autoarticolato che, il 9 dicembre 2021, si è ribaltato e si è schiantato contro la spalla di un ponte nei pressi della città di Tuxtla Gutiérrez, nello Stato del Chiapas, in Messico.

Cinquantacinque migranti sono morti nell’incidente, tra cui una ragazza di 16 anni, mentre decine di altri sono rimasti feriti. I sopravvissuti hanno raccontato di essere stati stipati nel cassone del rimorchio in modo così serrato che la maggior parte dei migranti poteva solo stare in piedi.

Le riprese video del luogo dell’incidente mostravano corpi sparsi sulla scena dello schianto, che le autorità federali hanno descritto come una delle tragedie più letali legate al traffico di esseri umani degli ultimi tempi.

All’epoca, le autorità messicane affermarono che quasi tutte le vittime erano guatemalteche. Le autorità dello Chiapas hanno dichiarato che tra i feriti figuravano tre persone provenienti dalla Repubblica Dominicana, un honduregno, un messicano e un ecuadoriano.

Tre dei quattro altri cittadini guatemaltechi estradati negli Stati Uniti in relazione al caso si sono dichiarati colpevoli di accuse simili: uno ad aprile e due il mese scorso. Le accuse contro il sesto imputato sono ancora pendenti.

«Questi imputati hanno agito di concerto per sfruttare persone vulnerabili violando le leggi sull’immigrazione di questo paese, con conseguenze mortali», ha dichiarato in un comunicato il viceprocuratore generale degli Stati Uniti A. Tysen Duva.
