South Korea’s Lee wants military airbase relocated by mid-2028 for chip cluster

SEOUL, Aug 10 (Reuters) - South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Monday urged the Defence Ministry to relocate a military airbase in Gwangju city by mid-2028 in order to accelerate the construction of a semiconductor manufacturing hub in the area.

The remark came after his administration unveiled plans in June worth more than $576 billion involving Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix expanding their operations to build new chip fabrication facilities in the country’s southwest region.

“It would be great if the Defence Ministry would be able to temporarily relocate the functions of the Gwangju military airbase to another base by mid-2028,” Lee said at a meeting attended by company executives on the planned chip cluster.

The 8.3 million-square-metre (9.9 million-square-yard) site was picked last month due to its transport connections and since the land had already been levelled, the Yonhap News Agency reported, citing a presidential official.

SEUL, 10 agosto (Reuters) - Lunedì il presidente sudcoreano Lee Jae Myung ha esortato il Ministero della Difesa a trasferire una base aerea militare nella città di Gwangju entro la metà del 2028, al fine di accelerare la costruzione di un polo produttivo di semiconduttori nell’area.

La dichiarazione è arrivata dopo che, a giugno, la sua amministrazione aveva presentato piani per un valore di oltre 576 miliardi di dollari che prevedono l’espansione delle attività di Samsung Electronics e SK Hynix per la costruzione di nuovi impianti di produzione di chip nella regione sud-occidentale del paese.

“Sarebbe fantastico se il Ministero della Difesa riuscisse a trasferire temporaneamente le funzioni della base aerea militare di Gwangju in un’altra base entro la metà del 2028”, ha affermato Lee durante un incontro con i dirigenti delle aziende coinvolte nel progetto del polo dei chip.

Il sito, che si estende su una superficie di 8,3 milioni di metri quadrati (9,9 milioni di iarde quadrate), è stato scelto il mese scorso per i suoi collegamenti con i mezzi di trasporto e poiché il terreno era già stato livellato, secondo quanto riportato dall’agenzia di stampa Yonhap, che cita un funzionario della presidenza.
