BERLIN, Sept 9 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Wednesday that an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport had been prepared in Russia over an extended period and that a disaster was only narrowly averted.

“This attack was planned in Russia for months and was specifically targeted at Germany, and only by pure chance was major material damage and harm to people prevented,” Merz told the lower house of parliament.

Merz spoke after the far-right Alternative for Germany scored a major victory in a state election in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, running on a platform that includes calls for closer ties with Moscow.

Russia has rejected any involvement in the drone incident at Leipzig airport, and its foreign minister has said these accusations were “the start of a real war”.

BERLINO, 9 settembre (Reuters) - Il cancelliere tedesco Friedrich Merz ha dichiarato mercoledì che il tentativo di attacco con un drone all’aeroporto di Lipsia/Halle era stato preparato in Russia per un lungo periodo e che si è riusciti a evitare per un soffio una catastrofe.

«Questo attacco è stato pianificato in Russia per mesi ed era specificamente rivolto contro la Germania; solo per puro caso si è riusciti a evitare gravi danni materiali e lesioni alle persone», ha dichiarato Merz alla Camera bassa del Parlamento.

Merz è intervenuto dopo che domenica il partito di estrema destra Alternativa per la Germania ha ottenuto una vittoria schiacciante alle elezioni regionali in Sassonia-Anhalt, basando la propria campagna elettorale su un programma che prevede, tra l’altro, l’instaurazione di legami più stretti con Mosca.

La Russia ha negato qualsiasi coinvolgimento nell’incidente del drone all’aeroporto di Lipsia, e il suo ministro degli esteri ha affermato che tali accuse rappresentano «l’inizio di una vera e propria guerra».
