France’s Hollande says may run in 2027 if victory looks attainable, paper says

MILAN, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Former French Socialist President Francois Hollande may decide to run for president in 2027, but only if he sees a real chance of winning, he told Italian daily la Repubblica on Monday.

• “Running for the presidency is not a decision to be taken lightly, all the more so for a former head of state like myself,” Holland said in the interview.

• He added he would consider running only under exceptional circumstances and only if there was a realistic chance of reaching the runoff and ultimately win.

• Hollande, 72, was France’s president from 2012 to 2017. The French presidential election will be held in the spring of 2027.

• French far-right leader Marine Le Pen maintained her lead for the first-round of the presidential election and far-left rival Jean-Luc Melenchon was second in most tested scenarios, according to a poll released two weeks ago.

• Macron’s former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe is the only centre-right candidate to come ahead of Mélenchon in one of the scenarios tested, and to tie with him in another. The other candidates would finish behind Mélenchon in all scenarios.

• “The France of 2027 bears little resemblance to the one I governed. We are facing a more threatening, more dangerous and harsher world, and a European continent that has become a target for powers such as the United States, China and Russia. Europe is confronting an existential crisis,” former president Hollande also said.

MILANO, 28 settembre (Reuters) - L’ex presidente socialista francese François Hollande potrebbe decidere di candidarsi alle presidenziali del 2027, ma solo se vedrà una reale possibilità di vittoria, ha dichiarato lunedì al quotidiano italiano “La Repubblica”.

• «Candidarsi alla presidenza non è una decisione da prendere alla leggera, tanto più per un ex capo di Stato come me», ha affermato Hollande nell’intervista.

• Ha aggiunto che prenderebbe in considerazione l’idea di candidarsi solo in circostanze eccezionali e solo se ci fosse una possibilità realistica di arrivare al ballottaggio e, in ultima analisi, di vincere.

• Hollande, 72 anni, è stato presidente della Francia dal 2012 al 2017. Le elezioni presidenziali francesi si terranno nella primavera del 2027.

• Secondo un sondaggio pubblicato due settimane fa, la leader dell’estrema destra francese Marine Le Pen ha mantenuto il primato per il primo turno delle elezioni presidenziali, mentre il rivale di estrema sinistra Jean-Luc Mélenchon si è classificato secondo nella maggior parte degli scenari analizzati.

• L’ex primo ministro di Macron, Édouard Philippe, è l’unico candidato di centro-destra a superare Mélenchon in uno degli scenari analizzati e a pareggiare con lui in un altro. Gli altri candidati finirebbero dietro a Mélenchon in tutti gli scenari.

• «La Francia del 2027 ha ben poco in comune con quella che ho governato. Ci troviamo di fronte a un mondo più minaccioso, più pericoloso e più ostile, e a un continente europeo che è diventato bersaglio di potenze come gli Stati Uniti, la Cina e la Russia. L’Europa sta affrontando una crisi esistenziale», ha aggiunto l’ex presidente Hollande.
