Thailand expects to clear Bangkok floodwater in two to three days, government says

BANGKOK, Sept 29 (Reuters) - The Thai government said on Tuesday that the standing water in Bangkok is expected to take two to three days to clear if there is no additional rainfall, with no heavy rain anticipated.

The cabinet will discuss long-term plans to address flooding and recovery measures on Tuesday, government spokesperson Ekkapob Pianpises told a news briefing.

• Bangkok was hit by around 320 mm (12.6 inches) of rain over two to three days last week, nearly as much as the sprawling low-lying city usually gets in the whole of September.

• Damage caused by the flooding was estimated at over $320 million.

• Although Bangkok’s main airports kept running through the weekend rain and flooding, some baggage handling operations at Suvarnabhumi Airport were severely impacted, with 69 Thai Air Force personnel called in on Monday to support ground operations of flag carrier Thai Airways.

• Hundreds of bags were still lined up in hallways inside the airport on Tuesday, according to a Reuters witness.

• In a statement on social media early on Tuesday, Thai Airways said 34 of its flights had been delayed on Monday and baggage from 52 flights between September 26 and 27 was being delivered to passengers.

• In another social media post, the airline said that it had cancelled eight flights on Tuesday “due to the flooding situation in Bangkok and aircraft rotation”, and warned that additional flight cancellations or schedule changes could occur.

BANGKOK, 29 settembre (Reuters) - Il governo thailandese ha dichiarato martedì che, in assenza di ulteriori precipitazioni e dato che non sono previste piogge intense, ci vorranno dai due ai tre giorni perché l’acqua stagnante a Bangkok si ritiri.

Martedì il Consiglio dei ministri discuterà i piani a lungo termine per affrontare le inondazioni e le misure di ricostruzione, ha dichiarato il portavoce del governo Ekkapob Pianpises durante una conferenza stampa.

• La scorsa settimana Bangkok è stata colpita da circa 320 mm (12,6 pollici) di pioggia in due o tre giorni, una quantità quasi pari a quella che questa città, estesa e situata in una zona pianeggiante, riceve solitamente nell’intero mese di settembre.

• I danni causati dalle inondazioni sono stati stimati in oltre 320 milioni di dollari.

• Sebbene i principali aeroporti di Bangkok abbiano continuato a funzionare nonostante la pioggia e le inondazioni del fine settimana, alcune operazioni di smistamento bagagli all’aeroporto di Suvarnabhumi sono state gravemente compromesse, tanto che lunedì sono stati chiamati in causa 69 membri dell’Aeronautica Militare thailandese per supportare le operazioni a terra della compagnia di bandiera Thai Airways.

• In un altro post sui social media, la compagnia aerea ha dichiarato di aver cancellato otto voli martedì «a causa delle inondazioni a Bangkok e della rotazione degli aeromobili», avvertendo che potrebbero verificarsi ulteriori cancellazioni di voli o modifiche agli orari.
