Russia’s foreign spy chief confirms he held talks with CIA director in Moscow

MOSCOW, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence service, said on Thursday that he had held a “working-level meeting” with CIA director John Ratcliffe in Moscow earlier this week and that they had discussed unspecified and sensitive matters falling within the remit of their respective intelligence services.

Naryshkin said the fact that they had met was nothing unusual.

U.S. President Donald Trump has described Ratcliffe’s visit - which came as the war in Ukraine drags on and as efforts to reach a lasting peace between the United States and Iran have stalled - as “semi-routine” and the Kremlin has been tight-lipped about what was discussed.

At least two U.S. media outlets have cited their own sources as saying Ratcliffe warned Russia not to attack any NATO member state. Neither Washington nor Moscow has confirmed that.

MOSCA, 27 agosto (Reuters) - Sergej Naryshkin, capo del servizio di intelligence estero russo SVR, ha dichiarato giovedì di aver tenuto un “incontro a livello operativo” con il direttore della CIA John Ratcliffe a Mosca all’inizio di questa settimana e di aver discusso questioni non specificate e sensibili che rientrano nelle competenze dei rispettivi servizi di intelligence.

Naryshkin ha affermato che il fatto che si siano incontrati non ha nulla di insolito.

Il presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump ha definito la visita di Ratcliffe – avvenuta mentre la guerra in Ucraina si protrae e gli sforzi per raggiungere una pace duratura tra gli Stati Uniti e l’Iran sono in fase di stallo – come “quasi di routine”, mentre il Cremlino ha mantenuto il riserbo su quanto discusso.

Almeno due testate giornalistiche statunitensi hanno citato fonti proprie secondo cui Ratcliffe avrebbe ammonito la Russia a non attaccare alcun Stato membro della NATO. Né Washington né Mosca hanno confermato tale affermazione.
