Baltic Sea nations plan drone defence task force, Germany says

FLENSBURG, Germany, Aug 28 (Reuters) - The countries bordering the Baltic Sea plan to establish a joint task force for drone defence that will allow them to react quickly in the face of the growing threat of hybrid attacks, said German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt on Friday.

Numerous incidents of possible sabotage affecting undersea cables and critical gas pipelines have taken place in the Baltic Sea, bordered by eight NATO countries and Russia, since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion in Ukraine in 2022.

The goal is to set up a task force that allows quick information exchange, said Dobrindt ahead of a meeting in the northern German city of Flensburg with his Baltic Sea counterparts.

“Foreign powers attempt daily to attack and undermine democracy, security and economic strength within the EU,” said the interior minister in a statement on the meeting’s objective.

He warned that such attacks could “take on a new dimension in the coming months” and the hybrid threat is “omnipresent.”

Germany has been particularly on alert over drone threats after one carrying explosives was found at Leipzig/Halle Airport - an important military logistics hub - earlier this month.

German officials have not publicly blamed any foreign countries for the incident, though some lawmakers have pointed their finger at Russia, which has dismissed the incident as “fabricated provocation.”

FLENSBURG, Germania, 28 agosto (Reuters) - I paesi che si affacciano sul mar Baltico intendono istituire una task force congiunta per la difesa dai droni che consentirà loro di reagire rapidamente di fronte alla crescente minaccia di attacchi ibridi, ha affermato venerdì il ministro dell’Interno tedesco Alexander Dobrindt.

Numerosi episodi di possibile sabotaggio ai danni di cavi sottomarini e gasdotti critici si sono verificati nel mar Baltico, che confina con otto paesi della NATO e con la Russia, da quando Mosca ha lanciato la sua invasione su vasta scala in Ucraina nel 2022.

L’obiettivo è istituire una task force che consenta un rapido scambio di informazioni, ha affermato Dobrindt in vista di un incontro nella città di Flensburg, nel nord della Germania, con i suoi omologhi dei Paesi del mar Baltico.

«Le potenze straniere tentano quotidianamente di attaccare e minare la democrazia, la sicurezza e la forza economica all’interno dell’Unione europea», ha affermato il ministro dell’Interno in una dichiarazione sugli obiettivi dell’incontro.

Ha avvertito che tali attacchi potrebbero «assumere una nuova dimensione nei prossimi mesi» e che la minaccia ibrida è «onnipresente».

La Germania è particolarmente in allerta per quanto riguarda le minacce legate ai droni dopo che, all’inizio di questo mese, ne è stato rinvenuto uno carico di esplosivi all’aeroporto di Lipsia/Halle, un importante snodo logistico militare.

Le autorità tedesche non hanno pubblicamente attribuito la responsabilità dell’incidente a nessun paese straniero, sebbene alcuni parlamentari abbiano puntato il dito contro la Russia, la quale ha liquidato l’incidente come una «provocazione inventata».
