KATHMANDU, March 28 (Reuters) - Nepal’s former prime minister, K.P. Sharma Oli, was taken into custody on Saturday as police investigate whether he was negligent in failing to prevent dozens of deaths during Gen Z protests last September.

This week, a Nepali panel which investigated violence during the anti-corruption protests recommended that Oli, 74, be prosecuted for failing to prevent the crackdown on the protests.

A total of 76 people were killed in two days of unrest, which led to Oli resigning.

“They took him from his residence this morning,” Min Bahadur Shahi, a senior leader of Oli’s Commmunist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) told Reuters.

Police spokesman Om Adhikari confirmed the detainment of Oli and his home minister, Ramesh Lekhak.

Rapper-turned politician Balendra Shah was sworn in on Friday as prime minister after a winning the March 5 parliamentary elections.

KATHMANDU, 28 marzo (Reuters) - L’ex primo ministro del Nepal, K.P. Sharma Oli, è stato preso in custodia sabato mentre la polizia indaga se sia stato negligente nel non aver impedito decine di morti durante le proteste Gen Z dello scorso settembre.

Questa settimana, una commissione nepalese che ha indagato sulle violenze durante le proteste anti-corruzione ha raccomandato che Oli, 74 anni, sia perseguito per non aver impedito la repressione delle proteste.

In totale 76 persone sono state uccise in due giorni di disordini, che hanno portato alle dimissioni di Oli.

“L’hanno portato via dalla sua residenza questa mattina”, ha detto alla Reuters Min Bahadur Shahi, un alto dirigente del Partito Comunista del Nepal (Marxista Leninista Unificato) di Oli.

Il portavoce della polizia Om Adhikari ha confermato la detenzione di Oli e del suo ministro dell’Interno, Ramesh Lekhak.

Il politico trasformato in rapper Balendra Shah ha prestato giuramento venerdì come primo ministro dopo aver vinto le elezioni parlamentari del 5 marzo.
