TAIPEI, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on Wednesday urged the opposition-controlled parliament to pass his $40 billion special defence budget.

“Taiwan’s strengthening of national defence is not to invade any country. We are simply safeguarding the way of life we are accustomed to. We may have ideals for peace, but we should not harbour illusions,” Lai told a news conference in Taipei.
